Liverpool Facing Premier League Showdown Over ‘Multiple Rule Violations’

Liverpool are reportedly set to receive a formal reminder from the Premier League about an important rule they must follow, following their 2-1 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.

The Reds’ loss — their fourth in a row — was sealed by Harry Maguire’s late winner. However, according to the Daily Mail, Liverpool could now be in discussions with the Premier League after allegedly breaching the competition’s multi-ball system on several occasions.

The multi-ball system, introduced in 2022, places footballs on tees positioned around the pitch. Under this rule, ball boys and girls are instructed not to hand balls directly to players but to leave them on the tees to help maintain the game’s flow and prevent timewasting.

However, during Sunday’s clash at Anfield, Liverpool appeared to ignore this rule in their push for a late equaliser. Ball retrievers were seen throwing balls back to players, and manager Arne Slot was also spotted tossing one onto the pitch himself near the end of the match.

While Manchester United staff reportedly noticed the incidents, no official complaint is believed to have been made.

There is precedent for punishment in such cases. Last season, Aston Villa were fined £125,000 for repeated violations of the same system under Unai Emery. Villa were found to have handed balls directly to players and even used extra balls during corners. They were also temporarily banned from using the multi-ball system for their first three home games this season.

The Premier League has emphasised that the system must be applied consistently across all matches to prevent any club from gaining an unfair advantage.

Despite this, Liverpool are not expected to face a fine or ban. Instead, the Premier League will likely issue a reminder to ensure the club fully complies with the rules going forward.
