Report: Liverpool board reach verdict on key player, January departure increasingly likely

Liverpool left-back Andrew Robertson was strongly linked with an exit during the summer transfer window but ultimately stayed at Anfield.

Atletico Madrid were among the clubs interested in signing him and are reportedly still monitoring his situation.

Liverpool prepared to part ways with Robertson

As per Fichajes, Liverpool’s board have now decided to sell the Scottish defender in the January transfer window rather than risk losing him for free when his contract expires. It remains to be seen whether Atletico will reignite their interest in the coming months.

Robertson would be a valuable addition for the Spanish side, given his top-level experience and winning pedigree at Liverpool. Having lifted multiple major trophies, he might now be open to a fresh challenge after losing his starting spot to new signing Milos Kerkez.

Despite that, offloading him mid-season could prove costly for Liverpool. Robertson still brings leadership and experience—qualities the Reds could use as they battle through a difficult period.

Selling him in January could backfire

Rather than sanctioning a January sale, Liverpool would be wiser to extend his deal slightly and sell him for a modest fee in the summer. Letting him go now makes little sense, especially with Kerkez still adjusting to life at Anfield and not yet performing at the expected level.

Relying solely on the young full-back for the remainder of the campaign could end up being a risky move.
